Not sure if you ever saw this on Facebook kiddo.
Magnolia
17? I think.
As I blink back years at a star.
You insist on teaching me
You started so early,
These lessons you’ve taught.
Maybe the first one was most important
Remember the wish you caught?
Ive thought of it often
Throughout the years.
Ive carried it in some dark places
Leaned on it hard to face some fears.
For those who haven’t heard it,
You were two or three.
I felt you try and get my attention
Poking at my knee
Flustered I was
CANT YOU SEE I HAVE THIS TASK?
My heart whispered sharply
Grab this moment it won’t last.
So with a huff and a groan
I got down on the ground
To see what importance
You thought you had found.
You were looking inside
Your tight white knuckled fist…
“Dad” you said so softly.
“I caught a wish”
Adamantly stated
Firmly making a stand
You said this wish wasn’t yours though
And meant to open your hand.
You told me plainly
So I would have to see
That if it isn’t yours
You should set it free.
You opened fingers
One by one
And out floated the dandelion seed
Perfectly unharmed in the sun
You KNEW you had magic
Right there in our midst
Most would see treasure
But you just blew it a kiss.
You hummed a little song
as it floated away.
“if someone catches my wish ever,
I hope they treat it the same way.
Happy Birthday Munchkin.
Fiercely,
your Father.
