Diy self discovery

Alright, here’s a blog post in the spirit of “scotecrateese” about finding your way using a challenging project:

DIY self analysis

If you are a human being and not an AI overlord in training, then you’re aware life’s a messy jigsaw where half the pieces are upside down and the rest are half digested nuggets salvaged from nature’s compost pile.. We all wander about trying to make sense of it, fumbling through career changes, awkward intimacy attempts, and relationships that fizzle out with way more gusto than they fizzled in.

I’m no life guru, or any kind of guru. But I stumbled onto something: a project, something that grabbed me like addiction. It wasn’t easy – it made me want to tear my amazing hair out and question the very fabric of reality. But as I wrestled with it, fought with it, made hateful love to it, something unexpected happened. I started figuring out my shit.  Discovered myself.  No joke as Biden says.

My Messy Masterpiece

For me, it was a bar I built for a guy who owns a restaurant (still hasn’t paid the bill). Maybe for you its restoring a clapped-out motorcycle, or coding a video game from scratch, or learning to knit with nothing but two sticks and a sheep’s suspicious glare.  Sorry, that was baaaad.  For me It was hard. Real hard. There were days of frustration, of wanting to chuck the whole thing into a fire and just shrug and say nothing.

What The Heck Does This Have To Do With Life?

Turns out, a lot. See, when you dive headfirst into a tough project, you aren’t just making something.  You’re putting yourself under a microscope.

  • You learn you’re tougher than you thought. Failure’s part of the process, and you get better at picking yourself up.
  • You discover hidden passions. Maybe you hated math, but building [thing] sparks a love for geometry.
  • You see your strengths and weaknesses clear as day. Turns out, you’re patient even when instructions sound like angry gibberish. But dang, you need to work on asking for help.
  • For me it turned out (and this still shocks me) that I’m a damn good artist.

All this self-knowledge, it spills over into life. The job interview ain’t so scary when you’ve stared down [tricky part of the project]. You make better choices because you know what fires you up.

Is It Worth It?

Heck yeah. A hard project won’t magically solve everything. You’ll still have bad days and bills to pay. But you’ll be building a toolkit, one full of grit, self-awareness, and the knowledge that you can do hard things. And that, my friend, is priceless.

So, here’s your challenge: Find your own [thing]. The weirder, the more frustrating, the better. Dive in headfirst. It ain’t gonna be pretty, but trust me, it’ll be worth it.

One very qualifying thing – make it something beyond what you are currently capable of doing.  I dare you.

Show me what you are doing.
